This month, the Royal Bank of Scotland released findings of a report which showed that, on the whole, businesses are unhappy with their broadband. It’s suggested that 1 in 10 broadband users are less than thrilled with their chosen internet for business purposes, and Ofcom have noted that businesses users are typically more dissatisfied than domestic users. Speeds, communications, repair times, and installation have all been cited as common reasons for businesses to question their service.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, there’s a significant difference in business internet satisfaction between rural and urban businesses. Reports indicate that almost half of all businesses in rural areas are dissatisfied with their business internet service, and are, on average, twice as unhappy as their urban-based counterparts. “This research paints a worrying picture of a divided business broadband landscape in the UK, and unless addressed highlights a clear obstacle to growth” says Mike Cherry of the Federation of Small Businesses, highlighting a need for many SMEs to take control and switch to business internet provider that can not only meet but also exceed their needs.
It’s not just broadband itself that business are unhappy with, as reports suggest that many SMEs are also dissatisfied with their mobile broadband. 67 percent of business users have made complaints regarding their mobile broadband speed, 49 percent regarding coverage, and 45 percent have found themselves unable to connect. Video content is cited as the aspect that has been most notably affected by these issues and, at a time when rich media is being hailed as one of the most effective ways to engage with consumers, it’s vital that businesses are always able to access valuable content.
Unfortunately, we’re beginning to see a trend for businesses – especially small businesses and SMEs – to stick with business internet service providers they are unhappy with simply because it’s the most straightforward option. Small businesses in particular are more likely to struggle to find the time to research alternative suppliers and identify a more attractive deal. The good news is that, if you’re unhappy with your current business broadband service, you don’t need to suffer in silence.
