While Black Friday, which is a trend we’ve borrowed from our friends across the pond, is traditionally thought of as the biggest pre-Christmas shopping day, this year all that is expected to change. With Cyber Monday falling on the last day of the month – payday – it is expected that the pre-Christmas sales will peak on Monday 30th November, with year-on-year sales growing by as much as 90 percent. But where did Cyber Monday come from, and what on earth does it have to do with business broadband?

Cyber Monday is a much more recent trend than Black Friday, beginning in 2005 in the United States, and making its way over to the UK a few years later. The term was coined in response to American retailers noting that their 2004 sales saw a huge, unexpected growth on the Monday following Thanksgiving. Why? Business broadband! Although the Friday after Thanksgiving is not an official holiday in most states, many people – particularly those who have travelled to visit family – use this as an opportunity for a long weekend. It provides a much needed rest to allow that turkey to go down!
